Diluted Simple Green (10 or 8 to 1)....spray on cold engine, rinse off with a medium to strong stream of water, staying away from the fuse box at the radiator and the electrics on the passenger side of the firewall --- may need to use a stronger solution or do this more than once for very dirty engines....let dry, wipe down with Armor All or similar for the manifold cover and all the hoses.......after that, don't let it get dirty again --- that's the really easy way to get your engine clean after that.

I would be a little leary of the simple green we're not allowed to use it on aircraft because it causes corrosion.

Just cleaned the engine on our new-to-me 2008. Used commercially available engine cleaner from the parts store.

Covered the alternator with a plastic bag. sprayed the engine cleaner on the cold engine.. scrubbed some extra thick dirty areas.. waited the proper amount of time (15 minutes or so) sprayed it off.

Repeated it, as it was pretty bad.

I use my leafblower to dry the engine the best I could before starting the engine..removed the plastic bag of course.

ran the motor to finish drying it.

looks like it came out of the factory now.. need to detail it at some point..but it is not filthy any more.

Have used simple green in the past, and other cleaners...but always had better results with dedicated engine cleaner. Not expensive $3/can.
