Default Eco Boost Engines

We are shopping for a new 2011 F150 with the 3.5 Eco boost engine. The advertised stats say that a 6 cyl. motor will pull 11,000 plus lbs. Should I believe the advertising and irsk the purchase given that I need to pull a 9000 lb. windjammer by rockwood?

A big decision.

I see you are new here so you'll be forgiven if you haven't read the oh....3,589 posts about the EB engines....lol!

Yeah, the EB is seemingly the 'real deal' and is the highest rated gas engine for pulling trailers, equal to the new 6.2 (rated the same, anyway).

Watch the videos on that site. Pretty impressive.

You're right. I assumed that the engines were talked about but could not find the 3589 responses. I am new and meant only to forward the conversation about this amazing set of motors.

Thanks,

How often will you be pulling this trailer? Just because you can pull that weight...does it mean that you should on a regular basis? If it's only going to be a few times a year, sure, the eco-boost will be your best bet. If it's going to be a weekly or even daily thing, you might want to step up to a larger truck.

Also, the eco-boost isn't out yet. Well, not in the US anyways. I'm not sure about Canada.

The worst thing about the EB is....it is dead quiet, like most turbocharged cars/trucks. In other words, you don't get that satisfying 'rumble' we've come to love from V8s.
Other than that....not much to NOT like, at least at this early stage.

Hes not pushing it close to it limits as I see it he is towing 20% less than the ratings and Im sure youve seen the videos of them towing max at wide open throttle for 24hrs. He would be fine with the EB at least from what has been seen to this point.

I would go for the 6.2. 9000 pounds is some serious pulling for a non-HD pickup.

The EB looks very promising, but what it doesn't have is the test of time behind it. The 6.2 looks like a solid engine design that can easily handle 9000 pounds, especially up steep grades.

No lie on being dead quite. I went on one of those factory road tests on December 16th (where a factory rep brings the truck to your house) and video taped the truck pulling up...Man, scarey quite. Anyway, if the truck delivers the mileage it is supposed to (mid-20's) highway, then I'm a buyer, since I'm only towing maybe seven or eight times a year. Friggin thing pulled like a freight train from 55 to 100 MPH wihout skipping a beat.

Of interest though, I asked the factory rep whatever happened to the little diesel that was supposed to be available in F150 and he smiled and said, "You're driving it", adding that the current plan is that the ecobost V6 plaform will be available in two years as a diesel or gas engine. His comment was if you like the torque on this one, just wait!

True, it won't be pushed to it's rated limit. However, this becomes a case of can vs should. 9000lbs is a big load. The engine will be fine, but how about the rest of the truck? This truck has to be able to safely stop, control the trailer under evasive maneuvers, and handle sway and bob. These are tasks that a superduty with heavier suspension would be much better suited for. Sure the OP would be fine to tow it, but if this is going to be a frequent task, buy the right tool for the job.
