E85 gas
Any body try theirs on moon shine yet? I did for 2 partial fill ups since it was only 2.88 a gallon compared to 3.45 to 3.75 for 87 oct.
The mileage seemed okay in town about the same 15, highway didn't do much better 16 to 16.5 is all, used to 17-18 per mile.
Any thoughts?

I Voted For Bill and Opus
Remember the KickaPoo-Joy-juice they cut the gasoline with has about half the BTU output of gasoline so in order to get the same amount of Ka-boom out of it you have to use roughly half again as much. There is no free lunch here.

Long-term use of E85 in vehicles not designed for its use can cause fuel-system problems. Don't know enough to say there's any immediate harm being done to the engine proper as long as it's running OK.
Rule-of-thumb from a heat-content evaluation of the fuels is that E85 needs to be about 3/4 of the cost of regular unleaded to break even. At any rate, suggest to evaluate your fuel cost on a per-mile basis to understand which fuel is truly cheaper.
Just throwing some numbers out - say you got 15mpg on E85 at $2.85 per gallon, and 17mpg on regular unleaded at $3.60 per gallon.
Your fuel cost per mile on E85 is $0.19 per mile, for regular unleaded is $0.222 per mile. So, you're saving about 10% on fuel costs running on E85 - with the caveat of future unknown maintenance and repair expenses if your vehicle is not specifically identified as Flex-fuel ready.
Ah, big jump in gas prices today (22May) - went from $3.55 to $3.73 - and this area has traditionally always been one of the lowest costs in the nation. Today's trading at $3.39 wholesale (www.oilnergy.com) would suggest prices just above $4 per gallon for this region after transportation costs, distributor and store profit, and motor fuel taxes are added in. Ugh.
Lots of chatter, both pro and con, about the use of ethanol - government subsidies, food shortages, environmental friendliness, dependence on foreign sources of oil, yadah yadah. To me, it is simply an analysis of how much does it cost to travel a mile and more importantly - which is the cheapest overall.
