It's not just GMs. If you actually shift an auto like a manual ALL the time, you'll F it up. But I agree that GM makes **** trannies.
You shouldn't use it all the time, no, absolutely not. But use it to lock it out of OD, or to downshift for a hill every once in a while, perfect.
I've refrained from being all "That's just retarded" like everyone else, but I'm (not) sorry for this: Shifting without using the clutch is F***********G retarded.

I agree that excesive manual shifting of an auto is probably not good.
As far as shifting a manual without the clutch, do you know many over the road truckers?
