Just keep the tank full.

Weight in the bed certainly won't hurt anything, and if it makes you "feel" safer, then do it.

But it certainly isnt necessary

I usually leave my bed empty. But I do have my toolbox which is full of crap and i have a screw w/ 5'5" bed so there isn't much room left to put extra weight haha. My toolbox is close enough to the rear axles lol.

I use 2 20lb bags of sand in plastic bags over each axle. The sand can also be used under the tires for better traction on snow or ice. May not need this on the newer trucks, but I''ve been doing this since I started driving in 1971. The sand has helped many stuck vehicles I've come across over the years.

X2, I can't remember the last time I even had to use 4x4 in snow. Now, if it is a 2 wheel drive your talking a whole nother game entirely.
