Self explanatory. I use gasket maker, but I'm curious what others use and why.

Where a pre-made gasket is available and easy to use, I prefer that. Especially with imperfectly machined surfaces.
No problem using gasket maker so long as I'm not in a rush, otherwise when it doesn't cure and oil hits it....game over.

They didn't use a pre-made gasket from the factory - so i have always used gasket maker....

I usually use gasket maker, but if I was going to use a pre-made gasket I'd use a Lube Locker gasket.

Best stuff on the planet bar none. Ford uses this stuff on Powerstroke diesel oil pans, or they use to back in the mid/late 90's. It's so effing atomic strength, they also tell you when removing the oil pan to replace it because you will bend the crap out of it to get it off the block. Yeah we bent every pan removing them, was able to straighten a few though.
Not so bad on a stiffer metal like a differential cover, once you stick it it's stuck and will never leak.

I've always used Permatex Ultra Black and never had a leak. If you do a proper cleaning and give it some cure time, I think any RTV silicone would be fine.
