Default different types of 4x4 systems?

Ok so I'm looking to get an older f150 early 90s-early2000s and was wondering about the different 4x4 systems they had back then.

The only 4x4 I have ever had was an old 91 explorer and then a 97 explorer

I remember the 91 explorer I would have to back up to disengage the front hubs. while the 97 had a AWD viscous coupling system.

So was just wondering what system Ford used for the f150 back then?

97-03 trucks the front axles were engaged via a vacuum actuated shift fork on the pumpkin..no backing up needed..pre 97 the front axle was like your old explorer if they even had auto hubs..some of those trucks had manual hubs
