They have some atomic adhesive tape holding them on and is very difficult to remove without damaging them, it can be done but putting them back on is going to require new body side molding tape, available at all auto parts stores. 3M makes it.

Good luck but maybe masking them off with tape and paint them on the truck would be easier.

I use a plastic trim stick at work. And they pop right off with no damage. Many diy'ers on here use fishing line to cut the tape. Then goof off, or 3m adhesive remover to get the tape off. The fender nameplates also have alignment pegs, that go into the holes in the fender.

Since they are attached with double-sided tape ...
  • warm them with a hair dryer.
  • gently, slowly, patiently pry the edges working the length of the emblem using nylon pry bars ...

*Available at Harbor Freight for not much $$$
  • any residue tape can be cleaned-off using mineral spirits or GOOF OFF or 3M adhesive remover or ...
how do you reinstall them?
3M™ double-sided attachment tape. *Available a any auto paint supply shop and most parts stores.

If you're still hesitant to remove them, just use plastidip instead of painting them. Much easier to do and cost less.

For what you're planning... just tape them off and paint them without removing.
