Dealer trades - how much of a financial impact on the buyer?
Hey guys,
The truck I want is in another state. It's only about 300 miles away, so I could go and pick it up, but I'd prefer to work with a specific dealership here if it makes sense.
I'm obviously not looking for specific dollar figures, but what factors beyond the cost of shipping affect a dealer's financial position? I'm thinking about the back end, like holdbacks or manufacturer to dealer incentives, ad costs, differences in invoices, etc. Also, does X Plan affect anything?
Has anyone purchased a swap where they felt like they negotiated a good price (e.g. close to invoice)?
Thanks,
-F1L

this is old, but when i bought a new truck in 2006, the dealer i bought it from did a swap from another dealer nearby. shipping wasnt an issue like it might be with yours, but i didnt cost any different. i bought it at x plan price and the dealer didnt charge me any extra transfer/dealer trade fees. only thing i might see them trying to charge you is the transport fee, but if they wanna make the sale, im sure you can get that waived.
Talk to your local dealer and see if they have ever done any dealer trades with the one youre thinking about thats 300 miles away. they may not even want to work with the other dealer.

The last 2 new trucks I bought were done that way. Local dealers didn't have exactly what I wanted. This was in 2002 and 2007. I got the truck I wanted at the same price I'd have paid for one on the lot.

Dealer trade should cost you ZERO. No impact to incentives.

It is up to the two dealers on if they will trade or not. All depends on what the trader dealer has that the trading dealer will want in exchange.
If it's a hot item they can make money on, chances of a trade are low, but if its something common, like say one dealer wants a blue XLT and they have a red XLT in exchange, they usually do it.
