4wd drive is better to have and not need it....than need it and not have it

I live in Florida and would not own a non 4wd truck.

I survived without 4X on my 97 F150 for years including launching 22' sailboats and such.

My 2013 is 4X. I drive the same places and launch the same or similar boats. No issue as before.

However . . . . . . . . .with my 4X, my bride and I were driving in the hills here in Washington State when we passed some forest trails. I looked at her and said I'm taking the next one! She asked where does it go! I have no idea.

Long story short we went places in the in my 4X4 I'd have NEVER taken the 4X2 and had one very romantic fun day up in the hills!

I find that I had placed a glass roof over myself driving the 4X2. I had mentally limited the places my truck could go knowing it might get stuck!

LOVE my 4X4 and it has taken me places I'd not have gone before! IT has opened up a new set of places to go explore!

I couldn't go with out it.

Late last fall I was hunting about 4 hours away from anyone I knew with no cell signal. I was sitting in a low ditch in 2WD. Went to leave and I was stuck as stuck could get. Wet grass, soft ground, just digging a hole. Flipped it into 4WD and drove out.

4WD paid for itself that day alone. I would've been sleeping there otherwise.

Another time I was driving around in an area I wasn't exactly supposed to be. Nothing illegal, it just would've been frowned upon to get my truck stuck there. Front wheels were at an awkward angle on some rocks, rear wheels were on wet grass. Put it in 4WD and was spinning all four. E-locked it and drove out.

My e-locker paid for itself that day :)

I don't use it often, but when I need it, then I NEED it. Also, I never go to 4WD or lock it diff until the previous method fails. Guys who dive into a muddy ditch locked up in 4WD don't have anything to escalate to.

I live in Boise Idaho and could get by with 2wd, but you would want to have a good set of tires and add some weight to the back of the truck and just drive smart. I have 4wd and almost never have to use it. But it sure is nice to have.

There's no way I could do without 4wd in the winter.

No. I've had plenty of both and empty 1 wheel drive trucks might as well get parked after Halloween where I live(Minnesotaaa). The absolute best urban 4WD system out there is the Honda VTM-4, however, off road further than wet grass, and it becomes useless. I will say my new FX4 reminds me of my old '76 F150 with the detroit locker that I added- in low range and e-lock the dam_ed thing will climb a greased wall.
