Default cold weather impact on fuel MPGallon

Hello to all,

While driving on interstate, I can usually achieve 20-22+ mpg per my real time digital fuel gauges. However, in SE Texas we had a few days of really cold weather [for our local climate] and I noticed that the best I was getting was around 18mpg, and this was with optimal driving conditions [no wind, level ground, 65-70mph].

Does the colder weather impact fuel mixture ratios in the EcoBoost or something else that would lower fuel ratings. Note, about 2-3 weeks prior, I had the BG 4 stage fuel system cleaning performed. It's the one that costs about $275 and takes about 2-3 hrs and uses a 4-package set of BG products. Wanted to add that in bc after that was performed, the truck was really running well and w what it seemed like add'l power. Note, I use the lower octane gas w a forced 10% ethanol, but always use reputable brands.

Thanks and let me know if anyone has any questions, tstex

We had -30 several days last week, including high temps that were -0. MPG drops dramatically. Just the way it is in cold country. And winter blend gas doesn't help, either.

Curious why you did the fuel system cleaning? Did you dealer push this?

Rick,
With EcoBoost, it's a requirement for optimal performance and elimination of future headaches. I did it by an independent BG shop, and the dealer has nothing to do w it...the way the combustion process happens w an ecoboost is much diff than a normal fuel injected engine and if not properly cleaned, it can cause damage valves and other...

I've never heard of anyone doing that. Might as well chalk that up to another "gotcha" with the Ecoboost engines. The debaters will love that crap.

I believe there's multiple threads in this forum on the topic...BG provides a 3-5K warranty on the work they do in this realm. With the DI engines, there's build-up of carbon on the valve heads outside the combustion chamber that if left there, they build up and start wreaking havoc...Ford I believe took a shot at correcting this on the 2017+ models...I am not a real techy, so I will defer to those that are more proficient on the matter. I can go back to the shop that did the work and get their explanation if anyone would like me to do so...thanks, tstex

It's been a 70 degree temperature change. Getting above 0 is a plus.

My 2010 is Flex. I can't guarantee the same mix from tank to tank so I think it's important to use an injector cleaner to help maintain good performance.
