When I replaced the struts on my 05 F150 I got loaded struts, so I did not have to deal with the springs & got new springs also.

I have this style, and while I hate them in a lot of ways, they have never left me truly stranded in terms of not being able to get the job done. I like the Eastwood single sided design much better. If mine ever give up the ghost I'll likely go that route (but these damn things just wont die even with abusive impact gunning and a complete disregard for their care).

I’ve seen what looks like the Eastman single side on flea bay for $85.

Looks like of the 3 options I picked the one that doesn’t seem to work. No one has chimed in saying they’ve used a clamshell for these type of struts.

Putting back on marketplace and moving on!

I removed the pivot pin and with both arms free, was able to get all 4 hooks and 3 of the safety catches so far. So it can be done. Tons of fiddling and need to consider the spring position and getting hooks in areas that have more gap. I can see how it might be a bit easier if done repeatedly but there's still a lot of low-tolerances to jiggle-n-fiddle that you wouldn't have with the other 2 types simply because all 4 hooks communicate with each other. If I were doing this again I would definitely get a better, more forgiving tool. I see how this could get bent up since there are so many spider-leg parts interacting. I haven't done the work yet but I'm guessing this tool would be last on the list compared with the other two.

pull it up on Amazon, has pictures and a video. Out of all the compressors I’ve used, this is the only one that wasn’t sketchy.

has safety bars and everything, it ain’t going anywhere

The Eastwood unit is beefy. Well, at least the plastic case it came in is nice and heavy with all the pieces inside. I haven't used it yet.
