Check engine light not working

My check engine light is not coming on when I turn the key to start it what should I try first to fix it

It is a 2000 f150 xlt 4x4 v8 4.6 with 189000 miles on it

Pull the dash and put a new bulb in, it either burned out or somebody removed it cuz they didn't want fix the problem and make it go away properly.
