Default carb trouble

just bought a 1984 ford 150 5.8L v8. The engine seems to be running too rich, u can smell gas. but if u idle it down it dies. My question is, would a rebuilt carb solve my prob? or is it some thing else that i should be worried about?

Sounds like a rebuild or replacement may be in order. If you replace it get one from Carquest or Napa. Don't go to one of the cheapo parts houses. You will have to go thru 5 or 6 carbs to find a good one from them.

In my expierence if its the original carb the mounts for the linkage are worn or other problems occour in rebuilding. I know its cheaper but might cause more headaches in the future.
