buying off the lot vs. build/order

buying off the lot vs. build/order
So I am looking at buying my first vehicle that won't be used and have a question. Let's say you walk onto a lot, find a truck you like and haggle the price down to what you feel comfortable with right? Well let's say you don't see what you like so you decide to build one. In my case I just went to the Ford website and built a 2014 STX and the price was $36,500. Is that negotiable or is it a set price since you ordered something that wasn't on the lot?

I think everything is negotiable. Does the dealership have one on their lot that matches your specs but maybe a different color? Compare for price with online price and lot price.
I like to think I got a decent price on my 13' FX4. Ended at 41,500. Ultimately, need kicked in and said oh well.

As a general rule they really want to get what they have on the lot out quickly and are more likely to bargain with you. Not saying ordering will be higher priced but the odds are not in your favor.
Out the door for my 13xlt was almost 10G off sticker price and it was still early in the year, Feb of 13 to be exact. Mine was already on the lot.

You will always pay top dollar for special orders. Even if you are able to negotiate it, it will not be as cheap or negotiable as the equivalent truck already on the lot.
What i want to know is if 2014 F150 special orders are more negotiable right before the cutoff date because its the final year of this generation.

If you see a truck that has everything you want on the lot go for it. You will get a better deal because they want to move the vehicles that the dealership has ordered and being charged interest on their capital. If it is not what you want and you can wait approx. seven weeks, order although you probably won't get as good a deal.
I am waiting on a 2014 that I ordered and is scheduled for delivery on 5/19. I decided on what I wanted, went online and got the Edmunds MSRP and invoice price (this is not the dealer's cost), and requested quotes from dealers in my area. There is a dealer that I have bought several vehicles from before and they are honest with a good service department. I targeted them for my purchase but for my negotiations got about six prices (including some from dealers that no way would I buy from but because of their sales volume were likely to offer a better price). I went in to my preferred dealer with factual information and asked them to meet a certain price which was below the Edmunds advertised invoice cost. Also remember that the Edmunds invoice cost includes a $595 "Holdback Cost" that the dealer gets back from Ford. Since I ordered and they had no investment in the vehicle I considered this my money. The invoice cost also includes dealer incentives and a reasonable profit.
Depending on your area, taxes and title cost are the same from dealer to dealer. The same for the Destination charge. What some dealers may not tell you is that there is a fuel charge (full tank of gas mandated by Ford) and an advertising fee. Make sure to get all of this out in the open so you are comparing apples to apples. This will also be the same between dealers.
Sorry that I was so long winded. Good luck!

I don't plan on ordering one, I have found multiple trucks that have what I want. I was just interested to see the build price vs the lot price. I noticed a lot of guys mention ordering trucks so it just made me curious.

That being said, the only downside that I see of special ordering is the incentives.
The Ford incentives that are in force when the truck is delivered are what you get, not the ones that are in effect on ordering day.

Not sure that is correct.....I will find out in 2 weeks. I had more than one dealer tell me that it is the best of the incentives from when you order until you take delivery. In my case ordered March 31 and should take delivery May 19........3 months of incentives to choose????
