Bring back the 300 six!
A gas guzzling engine with no HP?
I had an 85 and a 95 with that engine combined with the 5 speed manual. The 85 came with 3.08 gears and was a dog. The 95 had 3.55's and it was a much better combo.
But I don't see it making a comeback.
...which is why it was dumped in '96. No chance for that thing to ever come back - it's impossible to make engines like that nowadays because their durability is due to being OVERbuilt. And modern design doesn't allow that; neither do emissions laws. The I6 engine is robust & smooth, but it's not suited to the space available in modern vehicle designs, which is why there are progressively fewer of them being offered. A V engine uses space & weight much better. The 4.9L (300ci) was originally a stationary-equipment engine (like agricultural irrigation pumps) adapted to vehicles.
But it had decent torque at insanely low rpm. It was the base engine in F250's, school buses, and light delivery trucks/vans. Not fast, but it would pull a load. UPS used that engine in their vans and replaced them every 300,000 miles whether they needed it or not.

it was perfect setup for work, towing and reliable transportation.

I should have said bring back the I6 . Yeah they wouldn’t build something that durable now with a gear driven camshaft. Everyone wants 500 horsepower now at least 300 hp. The new Ram trucks will have one.
Yes, it is very durable and that's about it. Being durable has nothing to do whether auto makers would build them again.Gear driven cam shaft is just a small attribute. The nylon gear teeth on cam gear are prone to shear teeth. The I-6 is too long in size, will not fit in modern trucks and is very inefficient compared to modern "V" engines.
