I don't know when the 5.5' box first appeared, but I think most over about 40 years old or so hear "short bed" and think 6.5'. I hear "long bed", I think 8'
It reminds me of someone saying "I'm married". Used to mean to the opposite sex, now you have to ask, "Are you married to a short bed, or one of those...Shorter beds".

That still doesn't tell us that anything besides a Raptor comes in a SuperCab 5.5' bed though. All it states is that the 5.5' bed is available on all trims (as SuperCrew trucks)besides Limited and Raptor, where they are standard equipment. Combine that with the fact that you can't get a Limited SuperCab, and that chart tells us that the only 5.5' SuperCab available in the whole F150 lineup is a Raptor.

I'm under 40 (barely) and still think 6.5' bed when someone mentions a short bed.
How did 6.5' become the standard and not 6' though? Never understood that.

You're reading it wrong. That chart states that the XL, STX, XLT, and LARIAT all come available as a SuperCab, and they also all come with an available 5.5' box. That doesn't mean they come with both. Using that logic, the chart also tells us you can get a Regular Cab XL or XLT with the 5.5' box. Just because both options are available doesn't mean they're both available together on the same truck.
Edit: I can see from my previous post that I worded it wrong by saying, "that chart tells us that the only 5.5' SuperCab available in the whole F150 lineup is a Raptor."
Although that is the case, this chart doesn't tell us that. It also doesn't tell us that you can get a Regular Cab or SuperCab with the 5.5' box though - only that both options are available.
