I have a 02 XLT super cab with a 4.6 I'm not much of a mechanic! Can anyone tell me what the cylinder shaped thing on the outboard side of the frame rail, (just outside the stock muffler) on the passenger side is?
It' approx 9" long x 2'' diameter. It's got a bracket in the center which I believe is fastened to the frame. The damn thing rattles while in drive when my foot is on the brake - like at a light.

No, not yet. I just pinpointed the rattle to this thing on Fri. and then we got 2' of the white stuff. I really only got my hands around the thing to try and determine what it is. It's bracket is loose which I believe is causing the rattle. It seems to be hanging down and goes up on it's bracket when I push it. The truck has 229,000 miles on it.
