Default Backup camera on while in drive and moving

I have a 2021 F-150 XLT Sport, Supercrew with a 3.5 ecoboost engine. It is a little over 1 year old and about 15k miles. Twice in the last 30 days, I have experienced the backup camera being on while in drive and moving.

The first time was after I backed my trailer into its spot. After unhitching it I got in the truck and put it in drive. While starting to pull forward I noticed that the backup camera was on. I took a photo so you could see the shifter engaged in D and the rear view on the center console screen. I jiggled the shift handle and the backup camera turned off and the center console screen returned to the radio view.

The second time I experienced this, I backed the truck into the driveway. The next morning when pulling out, I noticed the backup camera was on while I was driving forward, I had traveled maybe 1/2 a block when I noticed it. I took a video to show the dealer. I tried jiggling the shifter and nothing happened. I put the truck in park and then back in drive and things returned to normal.

The dealer said they did not detect any OBD codes and could not get the situation to recur. I did send the service writer the photo and video so they knew I wasn't going crazy. Has anyone ever experienced this issue?

Sounds like a sensor for the reverse is bad or needs adjustment. I'm not sure what kind of sensor it is. I would think it is electronic (almost everything is now a days), but the jiggling fixing the issue adds bought to that conclusion.

Personally, I wish Ford would allow via a momentary switch to view via that camera. Be nice to check chains, coupler etc after about 10-20 miles. I'm in the habit of stopping to check after first connecting a trailer.

Hello! Send us a private message with your VIN and the name and location of your local Ford dealer. I’d be happy to see what I can do to assist with this. Thanks!

From the owners manual.

Rear Camera Delay
Selectable settings for this feature are ON and OFF. The default setting for the rear camera delay is OFF.
When shifting the transmission out of reverse (R) and into any gear other than park (P), the camera image remains in the display until your vehicle speed reaches 6 mph (10 km/h). This occurs when the rear camera delay feature is on, or until a radio button is pressed.

12" Sync4 screen? That's a FEATURE that was recently added via OTA. You can view your rear view camera facing your trailer, your rear view camera facing down at your hitch, and your bed camera facing back all while at speed. Just push the camera button while driving - you don't even need a trailer connected. Then you can toggle through those three views with the on-screen soft button. Pushing the camera button again should turn it off. You can also view the bed camera while in motion on one of the IOD cards (right side of display).

Unless, of course, you have not YET received that OTA and you DO have a problem. LOL. But bed and rear camera @ speed was, in fact, just added as a feature.

cc8251, that you for pointing that out. Sure enough, right there on pgs 302 & 303. I wonder why I never noticed that feature previously.

An update, the original reason I brought the truck into the dealer was for two recall notices I received (1. replace wiper motor & 2. reprogram the trailer brake controller). I left the truck at the dealer so they could troubleshoot the camera issue and perform the recalls. It turns out they do not have the wiper motors in stock and they do not know when they will get them. So I am picking up the truck tomorrow.

While I am there I am going to verify that the rear camera operates according to the feature setting. And assuming that is the explanation, how come the dealer did not point that out?

Not sure how someone here can answer that question. Only the dealer can.

And, again, once you get the OTA update containing the change, you'll get the bed and trailer camera views at speed. Any speed.

I just thought I would query the experience of the crowd. The dealer has already said they don’t know. In fact, if you read the thread, one user has pointed out pg 302 in the owner’s manual that it’s a feature. I checked with the dealer and they did not know that. Turns out it doesn’t hurt to ask questions.

I’m picking the truck up shortly. I will verify the camera views.

Question: I did not purchase the 360 view option, so to date I have not noticed a bed view. I am told that is also why I don’t have adaptive cruise control. It needs the front camera for that. Does that sound correct?
