Auto Shut-Off Headlights
#21
DRL is not just as good as headlights. In some states headlights are required when it's raining and DRL won't always do that.
From my window sticker.
Notice it says AUTO ON/OFF HDLMP
What I want is AUTO OFF HDLMP without the AUTO ON part.
How does DRL work? The manual isn't clear.
And what does this excerpt from the manual mean?
With drl active and switch on the auto setting, if the sensor detects light telling it day, headlights are off, DRL are on. Once light gets dim, headlights on, DRL off. All automatic. Mine come on within 16s of going in a parking deck even.

I did research the different trim levels of the F150 and the one I chose said Auto Lamps. It just amazes me that in 2014 Ford still doesn’t know how to properly implement this feature.
With all the useless crap in the menu system what would it have taken to put in “Headlights – Auto Off – Yes/No”?

depami ... I haven't check this myself yet, but don't headlights turn off automatically now (even when left on) once the truck is off and it's been sitting there for like, 5-10 minutes or something? I know the interior lights shut off automatically as part of the protection against battery drain. I would imagine the headlamps do that too.
this may not be what you want ... you sound like you want them to shut off w/ the vehicle. To be honest, while i'm sure that exists on some vehicles, I have never seen that "feature".
Quite frankly, if this is something you really want/need, I would have your truck modified to do what you want. I'm sure that can be done.

yes the headlights shut off after 5 minutes if you forget to turn them off so your battery won't run flat, I did this this morning! Just an installation of a 4300k hid kit with a toggle switch to the dash will give you the control you are looking for!

Okay, I figured it out and I apologize if I offended anyone in the process.
First off, the lights do turn off, I just didn't wait long enough. It took somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes.
Second, it all comes down to one thing ..........
.......... there is no drivers side grab handle!!!!!
Believe it or not, I think that is the whole issue. Every time I get in I cuss that fact and it sends me into gripe mode, looking for more to complain about.
It is a pretty nice truck and I'm sure that over time I will grow to like it just as much as my last one.
So, rock on and enjoy your Ford trucks.
Peace,
Denny

Denny: what SYNC system do you have in your truck? If it's the MFT or at least got the control center in your gauge cluster on the dash, you should be able to find a setting for the length of time your lights stay on. I can't remember for sure if it controls only the interior lighting when you use your key fob, or if you can actually set the delay on all the lights on the truck. Either way, at least your lamps turn off after a period of time that's not detrimental to the battery, and you now know you have what you wanted.
as for the "no grab handle", I got used to that in one day of having my new truck. I would LIKE to have had the handle like before in my 08, but of all things to be gone, I'm glad it was that and not something else I would miss more.

There are menu choices from 0, 5, 10 .... on up to 180 or so second delay for the AUTO LAMP position. There are no choices for the ON position but they do eventually shut off. I can make do fine once I get more familiar with things.
My 2001 F150 was one of the best vehicles I've ever owned and I am still suffering from separation anxiety. Once that subsides I'm sure I'll bond to some extent with this 2014.

I'm in the same boat as you...My car before my 2005 F-150, a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer would turn the headlights off if the **** was left in the "ON" position and the ignition was turned to "OFF" I turned them to "ON" when I first bought the car and didn't touch it in the 4 years I had it. My 1995 Toyota Camry daily driver is the same way.
I hate "auto" lamps because you could drive through a shadow from the clouds and they'll cut on and off. I don't think it would be too difficult to rig up an interrupter relay with the ignition and headlamp switch, I just haven't researched it enough yet...I imagine that is how these other vehicles do it.
