I bought truck used, and all was well. About a month after, I decided to step on the gas and see what it can do. I was told it had a rebuilt motor in there from couple years prior, but whatever. Anyway I wanted to see what kind of git up n go it had. Thats when it when from sounding like a smooth engine to the tapping sound constantly. So frustrating.

2004 5.4 3v Triton

Noises 5.4 3 valve make, Cam Phaser, Exhaust Maniford bolts broken off in engine causing exhaust leaks, bearings on cam followers worn badly, You can search youtube for eacy type of noise. If the crankshaft has developed too much front to rear engine movement play the engine is done and not worth rebuillding.

 

turned out to be a loose spark plug in cyl 5 [for several years wow]
