AFE Stage 2 Intake
Ok, so I installed the intake yesterday and took it for a test drive. Drove it a little last night and to work today. Here's my assessment so far!
1. Don't really notice a lot of increase in power. Maybe some on the low end.
2. Install was extremely easy and the instructions were exact.
3. Extremely annoying noise. I don't mind some noise if it sounds good but its very inconsistent. Lower rpms at medium throttle its very loud but when you punch it, it sounds just a hair louder than stock. It goes from no noise to a lot back to none when taking off from a stop light under normal acceleration (it really sounds terrible guys and girls). It also make a loud noise when you let off of WOT but I kinda like that one, sounds like a BOV on a tradional turbo vehicle (I know this truck doesnt have one for you turbo experts).
This thing really sounds bad at times (like something is grinding almost, its not though). If I can't get the noise under control, this thing will be up for sale. Which leads me to my question to the forum... Has anyone with this intake purchased the cover for the filters? I've read the reviews on it and people have said that it helps with the noise but wanted to discuss it with those of you that have it before I spend another $50 on this thing just to turn around and sell it.

I put one on my 5 liter as well and have the same results as you other than being stupid loud a full throttle. I had purchaces the cover from afe as well and it does nothing for sound. I am in the same delimma as you. I know 5 star has a better cover to fit mine, I don't know if it fits the Eco one as well. I think he makes them because or the poor fit of the afe one. Suscribed.

Posting in the general forums isn't going to catch a lot of attention. For your information it does have BOV's, two of them, built into the turbos and routed back into the intake tract. You can see the hoses on top of the turbo intake housings going back to the intake right in front of the turbo. You're going to get a lot of noise, between the air moving with the filters open, bov's going and wastegates in the exhaust. I think the cover would quiet it down a good bit. I haven't tried it.
Thanks for the info on the BOVs and me posting the thread in the wrong place, my first started thread.
I'm going to order the cover and see if it helps... i'll see if 5 star has one first.
I'm not an old guy (28)... I can appreciate some noise but this noise doesnt sound like my old intakes. I'm telling you this sounds bad. I might like it if the noise was loud all the time or at WOT but its at weird times and for short periods. We'll see I guess.

Just for an update and real world test results... I took the CAI off today (atleast until SC comes out with a CAI tune), I felt more power than I remember ever having. I ran a few 0-60 times with the CAI and here are my results:
2wd best time, 6.4 sec.
4wd best time, 6.6 sec.
I took the AFE stage 2 off today and here were my results:
2wd (only 1 run), 6.8 sec.
4wd (only 1 run), 6.0 sec.
The amount of power I gained by putting my stock intake was more than noticeable. .. the 2wd time was slower because the tires were spinning so much. When I put it in 4wd and ran again my co-pilot looked at me and said "holy $*&#". This is a guy who rides with me to work daily and never got to exprience the tune w/o the intake because he was on vacation for the short time that I had 1 w/o the other. He was with me for the runs with the intake and he said "you'd be insane to put that thing back on"
This may be due the the way that the engine is tuned but it definitly runs much better w/o it and my MPG is DEFINITELY better w/o it. Thinking heavily about coupling it with my stock appearance package wheels to see what kind of wheels and tires I can get for them together.
