Default an advice from the experts, please

I am about to get a new 2010 F150 S/Cab, but I am a bit undecided.
There are some great deals going on now for the FX2, but this is not a 4x4. The 4x4 would come in an XTR package and about $4000-$5000 more.
I never had a truck before and never been into the bush, unless taking the Cobalt into the grass for a picnic can be called offroading

Will I need the 4x4 so I can justify the price difference ? Here add the weight, maintenance and gas. I know the gas will come into play when I will get rid of the Cobalt, but I am ready to take the plunge.
I will tow a small boat, under 2000 pounds. I am doing 75% highway driving. Im not really planning going into the bush, but hey, once I have it..why not ?

My questions:
1. Should I wait for the 2011 models? are they going to put in the 5.0 engine?
2. Should I go for the 4x4 XTR instead of the FX2?
3. Is the mpg that much better in the 4x2?

I like the looks of the FX, but I think the XTR is taller. I am not looking for comfort, just reliability.

Thanks !

I would stay away from a truck when it's the first year of a 'new' engine. Thus, if in fact they are coming out with a 5.0L (which I didn't know they were), I would wait a year at least, so that they can fix all the 'kinks'.

I believe a 4x4 is worth the money IF YOU ARE GOING TO NEED IT (for pleasure, work, or emergency weather). If not, then I wuold stick with the FX2. Both are nice trucks, and the FX2 has a nice appearance to it. MPG really isn't THAT big of a difference, but since you decided on buying a truck, that shouldn't really be an issue

Good luck, and keep us posted

How much snow do you get, and how are the roads when you do get snow? I made the jump from a 08 Honda Civic to a 10 F-150 STX SCAB, and it was a big difference on gas, but I love my truck. If you don't get the snow that often or it isn't that bad, I'd just get the Limited Slip axel and go with the 2wd.

if it was me i would get the 4x4 option. you may never really need it, but if you get in a situation where you do, its definitly worth it. never really had to deal with snow but if thats an issue then take that into consideration.

I am struggling with the same issue....Leaning to the FX2...I pull a small boat or haul a kayak or two, but that is about it.

Waiting til the month of July rolls in, been told that that is the best month to make the purchase...

Any ideas on getting the best price????????????

If i only ever NEED my 4 wheel drive once while owning my truck, it will be money well spent.

I used to tell cars and if you want a good deal wait until the last day of the month in the evening...that is a last chance sale for a salesman to get one more sale and it could possible meant the difference of a bonus or no bonus... they could sell you the car and lose 1000 on the deal but that salesman might only need 1 more sale for a $500 bonus... find him... he will wheel and deal the best for you... another good time to buy a new car is a few months or so after the new model year comes out... the dealership will have more newer models in and most people will buy the newer year over the current... and they usually will have pretty awesome customer rebates and dealer rebates to get rid of them.. but watch the market before you know it they will all sell and you will be stuck...Or wait for Memorial Day and Labor Day sales... Dealerships like to make big bangs on those weekends... And of course the last day of the year... one last one for the books for that year... if you have any other questions feel free to ask... Good Luck...
