Default abs light

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to troubleshoot an ABS light problem? I have no codes showing on my scanner. The light comes on after driving a short distance. It is not a set distance some times it comes on faster or slower, and speed doesn't seem to make a difference. I suspect a wheel sensor. How do I verify? I have read on here that sometimes they get dirty and have to be cleaned. Is that the prox switch itself or the segmeneted disk on the hub? Or both?

What year? You'd do better if you posted in the section covering your year.

Because of the random nature in occurance, I'd start by checking the brake fluid level & making sure the float switch isn't hanging up inside the reservoir.
