I can not figure out if it's the Cam Phaser making noise or if it's a timing chain maybe hitting the timing cover. Any input would help. Thank you. 2005 168,000 miles. No check engine light, no rough idle and no loss of power. Engine runs flawlessly

same here. I have a 2005 lariat with the 5.4L. mine sounds like your's but only half as loud Yours seems pretty loud to me.


Just like you, the truck runs flawless, no loss of power. It has about 150K on it.


I switched to a 5w 30 full synthetic and it quieted it down considerably. I'm pretty sure that is the well known cam phaser issue.

I drove the truck 13 hours to Atlanta with no issues along the way there and back

Does anyone think this could be a possible timing chain guide or tensioner also went? Or is going?
