Default 4x4 not working...

My 1999 F-150 has been hard to shift into 4x4 for the past couple of years. It has 140,000 miles on it. I don't have a lot of money to put in it right now. Is there an easy fix for this. I tried shifting it in the other day and could not get it to shift at all.

Assuming (and this is a BIG assumption) that it has a manual shift lever going to the transfer case, what do the bushings in the linkage look like? If the linkage is sloppy it may need adjustment.

Maybe shoot some lubricant on everything in that area underneath the truck, I'm not sure what is actually under there (linkage) cause I haven't even looked under mine in that area...lol.
