Electric shift or manual? Do the 4x4 lights turn on when you start the truck? Do they turn on when you engage 4hi? 4lo?

Where are you? Is it still below freezing?
I have seen snow and ice pack around the electric actuator and prevent it from moving.
Have also seen snow pull wires off of actuator.
Wont hurt to check......

Also when was the last time you just flipped your 4x4 switch? The mototrs can actually go bad from sitting a long time, i switch mine about once a week, not neccessary that much nut especially in the winter i like to be safe just in case.

Check the elect. connector at the shift motor, its mounted on the transfer
case. Disconnect and check both male and female sides, make sure they are clean and dry, apply a liberal amount of dielectric grease and reconnect. This is all it took to "fix" my 2000 Ranger,it had the same symptoms you describe.

Check motor on transfer case 1st. You can remove it, ground it and check if working by switch...if ok problem is in transfer case..maybe a shift fork>
