Nope, he has the manual hubs.

Recently, his son borrowed the truck and put it in 4-wheel drive to help pull a friend out of the mud on the side of the highway. He couldn't get it out of 4-wheel drive and drove 20 miles home that way. My friend took the truck into the back yard and put it in 2H and put her in reverse and hit the gas and the truck popped out of 4-wheel drive.

i thought that was the purpose of manuel hubs, turn to lock and turn to unlock. almost sounds like they were sticking in the lock position. i have heard of hubs getting locked in position and requiring a little bit of wheel spin to pop them free, but this was after driving on a hard surface, and not allowing any wheel slip. but thanx for the correction dewman.

My owner's manual is in my truck, and it's raining, but if I remember correctly, that is what I read about using the 4x4. That you lock the hubs prior to moving the shift lever into 4H. At that point the owner's manual says you can shift from 2H to 4H at any speed. You need to stop the truck and put into neutral to shift to 4L. To remove from 4x4, it says you put the truck in 2H and drive backwards for at least 10 feet. Of course, you could spin the wheels in the dirt to accomplish the same effect, which is what my friend did.

Default well there you go

You some times need to back up a little but usually an inch or so and the shift fork will dissengage. my truck was shifting intermittently and it was the shift fork. some gea a little rusty some bend and some break. it sounds like to me like the same problem I had. (2003 supercrew) if you dont use the 4x4 regularly you should just sit in the driveway and once or twice a week shift in and out 4hi 4lo and back out. that way every thing keeps from sticking.
