Default 4wd?

My new truck is my first vehicle with the 4WD. Due to that I don't know when to switch to the 4WD High and 4WD Low. So could someone please tell me when you switch to them (when your parked or on the go?)? Also, it has the double fuel tanks and I'm not sure when you switch from the front one to the rear one. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely
Bubba

Do you have electronic 4x4 switch or is it a small shifter on the floor?

Generally, 4wd low is for super low grunt power, ie stuck in something that 4high cant get you out of. I've been told to never go over 10 mph in it but so far, I've never had a case where I've actually needed 4 low.

Far as when you shift, I know for mine, ( 93 so it has the floor manual shifter ) I have to do it when stopped.....

For the fuel tanks, you should have a front and back fuel gage indicator on dash and there should also be a switch to the left side of steering column. When front tank is low / empty, flip the switch to the back tank and vice versa.....

^^Sog is on it.

4lo should always be at a stop. That is very low gearing and you WILL **** off your your truck if you try poppin it in while in motion. Stop and scout ahead if you need to be sure of where you are goin. If you get stuck make sure the wheels are not free spinning when you put it 4lo. It happens all the time.

What truck are you drivin??

Im drivin a 1995 Ford F150 4x4 Flareside with a 5.8L V8. It has the electronic 4x4 where I have the button to the right of the steering wheel. So I should only shift into 4x4 low when I'm totally stopped, but can I switch into 4x4 high when driving? Thank you.

Sincerely
Bubba

You can switch to 4 high while moving but not very fast. I would recommend stopping first if I were you, better for your truck.

I assume you mean 4 high and normal driving speeds would be ok. I wouldn't try racing or anything fast. Generally, if you NEED 4wheel drive, you aren't gonna be going highway speeds anyhow. When I have to use it in snow and go on the freeway, I usually limit to 40 or 45. 4wheel will help you grip the road a ton better but don't think that just cause you have it, that it will help you stop on ice faster....

And don't use it on dry pavement, wont kill it but generally only want to use it when it's actually needed....

^^^ best thing for your truck. I have a 2002 5.4L f150 and its electronic on the fly **** switch 4x4 but no matter what i always try to stop then engage 4x4 hi. and The only time i ever use 4x4 low is if i'm towing or pulling someone out of the snow or mud. I'm guessing you also have to get out of the truck & lock your hubs up front too right. Some say once you have it locked in, put it into reverse and drive back a few feet then put it in drive and on your way. Just ensures a good lock in of the 4x4.

As for driving at higher speeds in 4x4, they say not to go over 60 km/h.

Cheers

I'm 99% sure you do. Go out to your front wheels and in the centre on the wheel on boths sides, theres a **** looking thing that says lock and unlock. once you engage 4x4, go outside and turn those ***** to LOCK, and that will ensure that your truck is in 4x4. If you engage it in 4x4 and don't lock it it just means your 4wd won't be on at all times the 4x4 button is pressed. some ppl will put the truck in 4x4 by just pressing the button and driving in light snow. (it gives a bit of 4x4 power). but when your in deep snow just jump out of the truck and lock the hubs and you'll be in 4x4 at all times. Just be sure that when you lock the hubs from outside. pop it in reverse and drive back a few feet and you'll be good.

Cheers
