I agree the fuel gauge could be out of adjustment. Maybe running to empty will recalibrate it - I don't know.
Toyota is notorious for this. My LX570 will have the light on when there is 6+ gallons left and say 0 on my DTE when there is 4 gallons left.

Why do you say that? With a couple of gallons in reserve, half a tank would be 17 gallons. A few more would made 21.
