Default 2013 5.0 Engine Knock

Hey everyone, I have a 2013 F-150 5.0 with 46,000 miles on it. I just bought it used around 6 months ago with 39,000 miles, and I'm starting to notice a knocking/ticking/tapping sound coming from the bottom of the engine. The sound is almost like that of an igniter on a grill. At first I thought it was normal, and that the truck is too new to have serious motor trouble, but I think common sense is starting to kick in. The noise is intermittent, and it seems that it needs to warm up first before it starts to act up. Some days it'll even warm up and not be that bad. I'll notice it, but only because I know what I'm listening for. It also only shows at low RPM and sometimes just running at IDLE. I usually hear it when I'm slowing accelerating from a dead stop or something like that.

I've seen videos of this exact problem on youtube, and I've even seen some discussion of this on Mustang forums just from searching on google. I'm new to the F-150 community (previously a Ford diesel fan). Has anyone else experienced this? If so, could you share some of your experience/advice?

I haven't taken the truck to the dealer yet because I just know I'm going to get BS'd and given the run around because the truck is under warranty. However, if they try to play hard ball should I ask them to try looking in the oil or oil filter/compression test/pull the oil pan? If that happens will I foot the bill for the diagnostics, and then have them tell me that nothing is wrong?

Any help would be tremendously appreciated!!

Thanks,

Travis

Based on the description of the sound and comparing it to the "igniter on a grill", it may just be your injectors. They do click under normal operation.

^^ That is my thought also.

Look at your sticker on the door jamb. What's your build date?

The build date is 12/12. And maybe my description is a bit off as well. I was just trying to find something to compare it to. The noise is coming from the bottom of the engine, and it seems to me to come from around the oil pan. It has more of a knock to it than just a click. I can here the injectors separately, so I understand how my description was confusing.

Every Mustang site has threads on the famous (or infamous ) BBQ ignitor tick. Here`s one from Utube:

Some folks claim that Ford fixed theirs, others say Ford & their dealer say its "normal" & refuse to do anything about it.

No way in hell that is normal. This has the smell of GM's bs back in 98 with the LS1 piston slap. Move on, nothing to see here, its normal.

I had a 2013 5.0 and had the short block replaced. Knocking noise. Piston slap and they said cyclinder wall distortion. I read here a few people had the same problem. Coming from the bottom of the engine. Could also be heard from the side wheel wells.

I had that same sound. And they finally changed my short block. But they said to drive it and see what happens. Hell no.

My build date is 12/12 also. I was just curious because usually the knocking issues are with the 11-12 models. I've heard of a few very early 13s with the issue but I thought they basically had it resolved by the time they got into the middle of the model year. Mine is at 100K miles and it doesn't knock. It has, however, had oil changes and service done on it religiously since new. Can you post a video so we can hear the exact noise yours is making?
