Default 2006 F150 5.4 3v feels old and tired (128k miles)

Just got this truck last week and I dont think the owner took very good care of it. Ive been doing alot of things to freshen the truck up, but now I want to tune up the motor if possible. From my research, it looks like this motor likes the Motorcraft spark plugs. Any recommendations on the coils? Id assume Motorcraft is best for coils as well...

Also besides plugs and coils, what other things are a must-replace to put some life back in the motor?

I appreciate your time, thank you

Definitely use the Motorcraft plugs, The coils you can use Motorcraft, or another reputable brand like Accel. I had the Accel's on my 2006 for 4 years/ 75k with no issues. Just don't buy some random off-brand.
Check the Airfilter, clean the throttle body & MAF sensor.

Just make sure you reserch the plug change on the 5.4. This engine is known to have spark plugs break off in the the heads and cost lots to fix.

Read all about the cam phasers too.

I would have have highly recommended doing this before buying so you’d know what not to buy, but at least you’re here. Check out the 04-08 section in this forum. You’ll get the most help there.

I would get Motorcraft coils also. There was another thread where someone was having misfires and turns out it was the after market coil packs.

How many miles did the truck run on Ford or Motorcraft parts from the factory? Hmmmm. Things that make one pause.

Stick with what's proven. Ford if you can get it. Motorcraft otherwise and pisson all else.

Thanks. Will any Motorcraft plugs do, or do I need a specific type? Here are the ones I am looking at for $68:
Motorcraft Spark Plug SP546 Set Of 8 Motorcraft Spark Plug SP546 Set Of 8

Also, it looks like a set of 8 Motorcraft Coils will run me around $220. Does that sound right? Here are the ones I am looking at on Amazon:
8 MOTORCRAFT IGNITION COIL DG508 FORD 4.6L 5.4L 6.8L V8 V10 ENGINE 8 MOTORCRAFT IGNITION COIL DG508 FORD 4.6L 5.4L 6.8L V8 V10 ENGINE

From now on I will post in the 2004-2008 section for questions like this, but I figure since this thread is already going it is ok. thank you guys for your time

I got a set of 8 from Autozone, and had 1 fail within 500 miles. In hindsight I should have bought the Ford ones, but as I'd just purchased the truck and was low on funds and needing them immediately, Autozone for $160 for a set of 8 is what I got. At least with Autozone, there is a lifetime warranty on them; I showed up with the bad coil, they gave me a new one, replaced it in the parking lot. I keep two "UBG" (used by good) coils in the truck with a dedicated 7mm socket/ratchet should one ever fail on the road again.

Read up on the threads on changing the plugs (and watch Ford Tech Makuloco's youtube channel). There is a special tool for extracting the broken plug ends; when my uncle did the plugs on my truck (when it was his), he "only" broke 2 (which were over 10 years old). As much as it sucks, a hot engine helps extract them.
