Default 2.7 EB questions

New member here. I've been researching and lurking on this forum for the past year or so. I have Googled and searched forums for hours. I have a couple questions hopefully someone can answer. I am looking at the 2.7 vs the 3.5 EB (I've read the post with the member on here who has both and I've driven both). First question would be, does anyone know how the 2.7 fairs up against the 3.5 in terms of 30-70 MPH? I know the 2.6 bests the 3.5 0-60 wise. Also, would anyone have any idea if the 2.7 will eventually get the 10 spd transmission like the 3.5 has for 2017. Possibly mid 2017 or 2018 year? Thanks all.

I own a 2015 xlt 2.7, but currently have a 2016 lariat 3.5 Eco rental and I can't wait to get my truck back!

I don't know if it's some sort of torque management software or what, but it feels much more tame than my 2.7 on hard acceleration. Don't get me wrong the 3.5 certainly pulls hard, it just doesn't have the snap feel that I have with my truck. I'm sure if these trucks had a 5 speed standard and a normal throttle that doesn't have drive by wire the 3.5 would be a total monster.

I do hate the fake v8 noise in the 3.5 I just laugh each time I hear it. Mileage isn't as close as I thought it would be. I do find the 3.5 shifts to a higher gear and pulls at a lower rpm as I have found this doesn't do much to help mileage.

If I needed to tow more than 8500lbs I wouldn't question getting the 3.5, but since I use my truck only to haul gear in the bed the 2.7 is perfect for me.

Passing at high speeds I would say the 3.5 feels a bit faster by the Butt dyno, but honestly I can't really tell the difference. Probably would have to put it on a dyno to see which could over take at freeway speeds.

My 2.7 has more torque/power than I will ever need. Unless I was carrying a heavy load, I can't imagine needing to "floor it" to pass anyone. I am sure the 3.5 is similar in that regard.

Although I have no idea when, I expect all trucks will get the 10 speed (or even a CVT) as manufacturers struggle to meet corporate fuel efficiency guidelines.

I have the 2.7, absolutely love it. Had a few hiccups early on but those have been worked out( Oil leak, hard shift)
I dont understand why some get such low Gas milage. I drive 120 miles round trip to work each day and mine is getting 24-26 mpg @ 60-65 mph.
Pulls my boat and horse trailer just fine, but it will decrease the mpg quite a bit. 50K miles and no problems.

In the 2017, the 3.5 has almost 100 lbs/ft more torque than the 2.7. Yet, the 2.7 so far has shown to be just as fast and powerful in the real world. To me, that says that Ford is clearly using a more aggressive ECU tune on the 2.7 that doesn't use as much torque management.

I think if it was me, I would buy the 2.7 for that reason alone. I hate torque management. My 5.0 is totally neutered from the factory. It's easy to tell that when you stomp the pedal, the ECU is holding the reins, not the driver.

Another 2.7 here, absolutely love it. The only 3.5EBs I've driven are my mom's 100k miles 2011, and the 2 user trucks I tried to buy prior to my '16: a '13 Plat & a '14 Ltd.
Likely the lighter weight, but my 2.7 feels quicker than all 3.

Warning-Opinionated old fart:
A few years ago the 2.7 design would have be considered an exotic race motor. Amusing conversations with my buddy and his direct injected 2.0L Solstice-yep, almost same size, yep got that, yep got that too.... Will it stand the test of time for durability? A test drive convinced me to do a long term test, previous 4.6L served me 18yrs.

10speeds? How much time is spent in gear vs time between gears? Doubt this is a performance driven move. Whats the parts count inside that trans?

tsigwing has the right answer, drive 'em

I have driven them both. I'm curious if the 2.7 will be as fast as the 3.5 (if not quicker) when doing 30-70. Im also curious if the 2.7 will get a 10 spd like the 3.5 has now.

I would tell you to drive both the exact way that you would configure them and make your own decision. I work in the automotive indistry and have been involved in the development of both programs and can tell you that most of the information regarding this topic is very misleading (remember that it is in Ford's interest to sell more smaller engines). If you have the two trucks side by side with the same cab/weight/and gearing, the 2.7 is not as quick as the 3.5 - it still comes down to simple power numbers - although the difference is very small and pretty impressive for a "base engine". The gap will also grow a little with the new generation 3.5, but either choice is a great way to go.
