Default $1100 Repair Bill - 2010 F-150

I've been having some power steering problems, so I figured I had a leak. I took the truck to the dealership and they say that there is a leak in the air conditioning condenser. They're telling me it'll cost about $1100 to fix.

The truck is 3 years old as of this past September and has about 25k miles on it. Not too happy at this point.

That sound like a fair price or are they eating my lunch?

3 year or 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty comes to mind here, can you be nice to the dealership and see if they can get it covered for you?

Sounds a bit high. For that money I would be replacing the condenser myself and take it in for a recharge when I was done. Definitely check with some independent shops to get quotes. If there is something more or you are dead-set on Ford doing the work ask about a 1 time cost share/good will. I had my 2003 in the shop back in 2008/2009 and they told me that my low end horn was out. I was mad because it always sounded like that and never mentioned it when it was under warranty. The dealer told me that as long as the truck is less than 10 years old and has less that 100k miles on it that Ford would cover 1/2 the cost of any repair as a gesture of good will. He told me it is not something Ford advertises, but I could use it on my horn or save it in the event that some big happened. I talked them into selling me horn at cost ($31) and I put it on so I am not sure how the whole process actually works? You could go down that path?

Did you buy the truck at the dealer where it's being serviced?

Then the dealer should have some customer loyalty money to play with. I had a 2006 Expedition. In 2010 the tailgate had rusted badly. It was $800 to replace it. Ford picked up all but $200.

That seems a little high. I had a E350 that the compressor had to be replaced and they had to replace the condenser as well and they wanted to charge me 1400 bucks for the compressor and the condenser. That included labor. But if they are charging you 1100 for just the condenser, I would be finding me a condenser and installing it myself. They are not hard to do. Just have to evac the system, replace the condenser ( I would highly recommend changing the orifice tube as well. Get the new condenser installed, vacuum it down overnight, and refill her with 134a. You might be looking at about 400 bucks if you do the labor yourself. That includes the price of the condenser and R134a. You can rent the vacuum at the parts house along with the manifold guages. Find you a R134a list of pressures on low and high side and monitor the guages. If you need any pointers give me a pm and I can help walk you through it. BUT, on the other hand, Ford would warranty it for 1 yr or 12000 miles. But the aftermarket condenser would more likely not be warrantied because most require you to replace the drier as well to be able to warranty any A/C componets. I would try the customer loyalty route first being you are only 9 months from your warranty being expired.

I'm thinking the $1100 is the entire repair cost, not just the condenser . . . Sorry if I confused the two.

The fella I've been dealing with is out of the office today, but I did go ahead and call Ford . . . They created a case and said they forwarded it to the regional manager. They said it'd be 4 business days . . . But, I'm out of a vehicle for the time being.

If you took the truck in because you thought you had a power steering issue, what did they say about that? If there was a leak in the condensor, the air conditioning would not work as all the freon would have leaked out.
