I honestly cannot believe it either. I made sure the gas pump did not shut itself off by accident as I pumped a couple extra pulls to top off the fuel. I am betting for less the next time since I have got in the throttle a bit more. My rough calculation based on my fuel gauge and trip shows 18.8MPG for this next time. I'll post the results within a couple days, I guess the engine is very throttle sensitive.

From what I understand if you have the 4.6 with the 6 speed transmission you have the 3valves per cylinder.

Mine is the 2valves per cylinder and I'm averaging 18.6 mpg 65% highway 35% city. I have to fill up at half a tank anyways because my truck has the 36 gallon fuel tank.

Anyone else getting these numbers from a 04-08 2v 4.6 engine. Wow go ford, I was light on the throttle for the whole trip.
On my recent trip from upper ohio to tennessee i was getting 21-22 mpg. I have a 4.6 with a hard tonneau and a k&n cai. Also, running a 93 percformance tune from php. My truck is 2wd though, so for 4x4 thats awesome. I guess a tonneau and the k&n is good combo!

love seeing all these high mpg posts. Wish my old 2000 XL with 4.2 would have given me that type of mileage. I could only sqeeze 17 mpg out of that downhill with the engine in neutral!

I'm pretty happy with my new truck though, even in 50/50 city highway driving I'm averaging 19.5-21 mpg which is truely awesome for me

*Update* Made the short trip again this year and here are my numbers. 331.9 miles traveled/18.9 gallons burned. This comes out to be 17.56mpg. I was a lot harder in the throttle this time bringing the rpm's up to about 2500-3000 when accelerating as opposed to 2000 or under for the last trip. My buddy drove a 7.3 powerstroke and average almost the EXACT SAME as me. Also, I was crusing at 74mph at 2000rpms for most of the way home which may have hurt me. Still love the truck!

What I can conclude is that it is all about throttle control, the slower you accelerate and the slower you go on the freeway (captain obvious) the better the fuel economy. These heavy trucks can put up some decent numbers but you really have to baby them and tick off the people behind you!

I sold my 03 SCab 4.6 a couple of years back. Highway I was getting 24-25 MPG... Thats Canadian gallons, before anyone freaks out...LOL. So by my math, that works out to be approximately 20 MPG US.
