Hey everyone first time posting I have a 2007 fx2 sport with the triton 5.4 And my problem started about 2 months ago and start up I heard a knock right before the engine fired up so I shut it off and re started it and same thing after I drive for about 40 mins I parked and re started it again and it didn’t do it so I decided to take it back out and check to see if it made any noise on the highway I pushed it from 40kms-100kms and although it felt a bit sluggish no noise as soon as I exited the high way it started knocking like crazy I still had power to get home a few minutes away but I haven’t drove it since I start it once a week it fires up no problem and idles perfect no I know it can either be the cam phasers or the timing chain my question would be should I get extreme and just change the engine ( fords recombination) or just bit the built and try to get my original engine repaired

it could be the phasers. does the truck sound like a diesel? might be time for a timing job. i dont think your engine is trashed if there are times it runs really smooth. how many miles?

 

it has 275,000 Kms and it’s got a little bit of a high idle but for the most part sounds like a throaty v8 i can drive it slow (had to move it a few times around the yard) and no issues but it’s basically still at idle when it happened the the knock was very loud and aggressive lol
