05 Problems
Hey guys- I have a 05 Supercab 4x4, Love the truck. I have big Michelins on it and it rides like a lear jet on the highway. A couple of disappointments lately though, at 60K miles. First, the bearing seal at the rear diff. went bad, and then a pinion bearing went bad 2 weeks later, causing a whining sound. $320 to replace that one. Anybody else having these kinds of probs?. Anybody with high miles on one of these? I am wondering if it is worth keeping for the long haul.

Differential Lube Quality:
The 8.8 inch differentials are pretty robust units; my guess is that one of the pinion shaft bearings was faulty from the beginning and just failed at 60K. Failure at that low mileage is atypical for the units.In addition, the lube for that differential should be 75W140 full synthetic; at least that's what the tag on the diff in my truck shows. Limited-slip differentials will need a friction modifier additive as well.

4 Wheel Drive Problem
I have an 05 suber cab 4x4, love the ride, great towing, etc. about 40k I had a clicking noise from the truck. Took a hell of a long time to figure it out as it would only do it when the truck was working, as in going uphill and only at medium speeds, 40 mph. Had a tin-like quality to it, definitely not the engine. Checked everything underneath the truck, nothing loose. Became more frequent. My mechanic used to work at a ford dealer, and when I described it to him, he pegged it on the phone. It seems that the 'cups' that keep it in 2-wheel drive require engine vacuum, basically a $15 item was failing. because I let it go so long, about two months, the cups themselves on the front wheels needed replaced also, $400, Ouch!!
Other than that I'm going to keep it for now, still rides well. Love it for long trips, and my dog loves to stick her head out the window, thats what trucks are for aren't they?
I replaced the brake pads and had the rotors turned myself last year at about 32K, some pads where OK, but I wanted to do them all at once and get it over with. Simple job. No other issues yet, at about 44K miles.
