Default Charging Adapter

So I received this PopMech Article apparently looking at this device to allow charging of most EVs using the Tesla network which has some sort of proprietary functions plugs (which I was not aware of until reading this article.)

Says it works for Ford Mach-E and a few other EV Fords and a lot vehicles without this proprietary plug.

$160 seems too good to be true, but it has 4.5 starts with 1,100 reviews on
Amazon Amazon
so I have some faith. Just don't want to have to have 15 different adapters for everyone's damned charging stations.

Thoughts? Anyone have experience with these? I know several folks here have a variety of other EVs so I am curious. Might be something handy to put on the truck

FYI...

This adapter is only for Level 2 "Destination Chargers" ala 240V AC Tesla EV Charge Stations that people typically have at their homes, apartment complex, and at small business/ restaurants, hotel parking lots, and some parking structures. Tesla usually provides these Charge Stations free to small business. They are typically free to use.

This does not work on the Level 3 DC FAST Tesla Supercharger network.

It is still a must have accessory for an EV vehicle!

These TESLA to J1772 adapters are very useful tools to have.

I would just be worried someone could steal the unlockable bulky adapter while your away charging your non Tesla vehicle. Some unsavory person can just walk up and disconnect it from your vehicle while charging and steal it. Since these are desirable and a little pricey, these would be easy for someone pawn/ steal and to sell on eBay or FB Marketplace. Costly to replace if stolen while unattended.

I like the TeslaTap Mini adapter a bit more. Much smaller and compact, but just a little more pricier. http://www.umc-j1772.com/index.php?r...product_id=143

It however has two lockable ends on the adapter. You have a padlock loop on the latch handle where it plugs into your vehicle's charge port, so no one can disconnect the adapter from your vehicle's charge port.

It also can be locked to the Tesla Destination Charger plug, so no one can disconnect the TESLA charge station plug from the TeslaTap Mini adapter while it is still plugged into your vehicle.

It would be wise to double lock it if left unattended.

Interesting guys. Thanks. I've not seen a Tesla charging station anywhere around men, but if/when one travels this could be helpful. Not sure how often it would be needed.......but if you need it and have it it's likely paid for itself hasn't it?

Plugshare.com. There are plenty of DCFC chargers around the country and the number is expanding. The only time a Tesla adapter would be needed is during road trip, or perhaps if towing locally. Otherwise, the vehicle should have plenty of range to charge at home/office overnight. I have the Tesla J1772 adapter and I've never had to use it. My EV only has 100 miles of range. Every L2, such as those at hotels, had both a J1772 and Tesla plug. I very rarely use L2 anyway, because if I need to charge at a public charger, it's going to be DCFC instead of L2. The only time I've used L2 is convenience while shopping, but not because I was low on range.

In my travels, it is rare that every level 2 has both J1772 and Tesla chargers. Never have they been the same physical charger. In my experience, most places are J1772 and not Tesla. We did have one hotel that had both, and the J1772 wasn't working, and we hadn't yet bought a Tesla adapter. So we changed hotels to a crappy hotel with a J1772. I now have a Tesla adapter as a result.

Years ago, Tesla basically gave chargers to hotels, they just had to install them. There are a lot of old, SLOW, level 2 Tesla chargers out there.
