Question whisleing Manual transmisson

Just bought the 1984 F150 Manual 4 speed granny gear..
The truck sat for a year. Filled up both tanks. Driving down the interstate and it started backfiring but then stopped back firing and ran fine. Now it has a loud screeching whitlsing sound coming from the manual transmisson.... Still drives fine and everything works But afraid to drive it in fear of wrecking somthing. Any idea what is wrong?

Likely you've got a bearing thats rusted up and gone bad. Don't know right off if your truck has a two piece drive shaft but if it does you might check to see if it has a bad carrier bearing.

When is the noise present, while stopped in neutral or while driving and if so any special gear?

As soon as you start it... In neutral and in gear but the screch whisling slows as you put it into gear but once in gear in continues...

Sounds like clutch thrust bearing! You can check this by backing off the pressure on the fork that operates the thrust bearing, start her up and if it doesn't screech then it's the thrust bearing, can't hurt to spray some WD40 or similar at it through the actuator slot!!

Good luck. Billabong

Agree with wbstaz about the clutch release bearing or "thro out bearing". Original T/O bearing did not have grease fittings, replacements did and is accessable thru the release lever hole.
