Transmission Swap
Sorry for being such a newbie, I am very new to Ford Trucks.
Last night I ended up buying a 83 F150 with the straight 6 in her. I love this truck.
She has the 4 speed manual, and I was wondering if there is any automatic tranny swaps I can do. I want my girlfriend to be able to drive it at the boat ramp!

There are several automatic transmissions that will fit the 4.9L engine.
1980-96 F-150 Automatic Transmissions:
3-speed C6 Automatic (Heavy-Duty transmission)
4-speed E4OD Automatic (Over-Drive Transmission)
4-speed Ford AOD Automatic (Over-Drive Transmission)
4-speed Ford AOD-E Automatic (Over-Drive Transmission)
One of the above transmissions may be known as: M50D
The two top holes on your transmission bell-housing and the rear top two holes of the 4.9L, 5.0L, and 5.8L (351W & 351C) engines measure 5 1/8 inch Center to Center.
You may want to purchase another F-150 with a 4.9L, 5.0L or 5.8L (351W) with a good automatic transmission, because you will need many F-150 parts to complete the swap.
An F-150 with a 4.9L and an Automatic would be the best choice.
NOTE: If the Automatic Transmission is an ELECTRONIC Transmission you will also need the F-150 computer from that truck along with the wiring harness.
Major parts you will need for the swap:
Automatic Transmission,
Automatic transmission Cross-member Mount,
Drive-Shaft from the automatic truck,
Transmission Cooler Lines from the automatic truck,
Radiator from the automatic truck,
Steering Column from the automatic truck,
Shift linkage from the transmission to the steering column,
Down-shift linkage from the transmission to the engine.
The Flywheel and Torque converter from a 4.9L engine can be used, but
if the transmission is from a V-8; the Flywheel cannot be used, because it will cause the engine to vibrate.
(The 4.9L is an internally balanced engine and the 5.0L and 5.8L are externally balanced engines)
I am unsure if the Torque Converter will interchange between the 4.9L I6 engine and the 5.0L & 5.8L V8 engines.
The Starter from a 4.9L automatic F-150 can be used, but if the automatic transmission is from a V-8, the starter will not work on the 4.9L and your starter from your manual transmission 4.9L may not work either.
Note: The V8 and the I6 radiators have different water inlets and outlets.
If the automatic F-150 is a different wheelbase than your F-150, the drive-shaft will be either too long or too short.
You will need to remember the year model of the automatic F-150 for future parts reference.
Also, when you have the transmission out of your truck, this would be a good time to replace the Rear Main Seal on your engine and the Front Seal on the automatic transmission, unless you know for sure the seals are not leaking.
Hope this helps and good luck!

I have been doing some research myself on this topic, but I am looking for a gas mileage savings. Right now I have the 4 speed and have been reading that Mazda made a lousy 5speed, and that I can possibly put a f250+ ZF transmission in.
What are the manual transmission options?
What are the manual transmission options?
To reiterate: Do other manual transmissions bolt up and mount to the 4.9/5.0 engine/frame? Is there a kit for mounting hardware, etc? Anyone done the 4spd to 5spd swap?
