transmission
4x4 transmissions usually have a different tail housing than 4x2 transmissions. This is because the transfer case (the device that converts a single output shaft to 2 output shafts) is connected to the transmission using a tail housing adapter section. Often, the output shaft length of the transmission is different between the 4x4 and 2wd versions. You can see the different between the tail housings in the below links.
