Default Timing way off??

Hello all
OK, the old statement that "if it's not broken, leave it alone" might well be a true.
I'm working on this 75 F150 4.9L
suprising with everything else it needs\needed it started fast and ran smooth.
But while doing work on the truck I noticed that the timing was not at factory.
So I proceeded to reset the timing... of course the truck would not start..turn over yes..
I am attaching 3 photo's One is the serated timing marks on passenger side of the block. the mark is at 6BT
the next shows the position of the Rotor. pointing to the 11PM location.. Next is the white mark I put on
the distributor housing, and where No. 1 should be...
My chiltons does not show much about the 4.9.
So can anyone shed light on this.. I will probably set the timing the way the Dist is
Best
Dave

But it's very common on engines that old for the pulley to slip on the balancer, causing the timing MARK to be off (even though the timing is still correct). Read these:

This not the first car I've timed... and I set TDC making sure I was on the compression stroke..
your's being a 83 it has a different cerated timing degree then my 75... As far as I can see I only have the notch
on the harmonic balancer.. I see on single line, but will look again..
I guess maybe I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill, since It is on TDC or 6 Bf... I should be able to move the
rotor to marking on the Dist..
I do appreciate your input.. helps wake up the brain cells....
I'll put a posting up when it's back running...
Best

Not much, anymore. The engine is from a '95 F150; the frame & most of the body are from a '93B; the front axle is from a '96B; the rear axle is about to get swapped to an '06 E150; the transmission is a '78 F250's, the chairs... I think the only '83 parts left on it are the front shoulder belts.

But the timing marks are functionally the same as yours, which was my original point.

But you didn't say HOW YOU FOUND that. The 2nd pair of pics above are for anyone whose timing marks have moved over the years. That MIGHT be you. If yours are still where they belong, ignore those pics. But the fact that the rotor is nowhere near #1 in the dist. says the HB pulley has slipped.

Passing on the timing issue for now, I think I have it worked out.
Anyone with a 75 F150 could take post a Picture of the latch assist spring... This is the one that
attaches to the hood.. I have no idea how it fits, The hood has a good size hole, and to the left is a
bolt hole.. Can't find any info on this via the net... not yet at least..

It’s been about a decade since I’ve had that generation truck but IIRC the spring threads into the hole a couple turns and then you bolt the tab into its location.

So my part of working on the 75 F150 is over.. I had the owner come and pick it up on Wed...
There is something wrong with the way the timing is set... but it runs, and its set on 6 BTDC.
I appreciate the suggestion that were passed on to me..
Thanks.
