Default switching from a manual transmission to an automatic question

Hi. Anyone know if there is much to swapping out a manual trans for an automatic in a 1977 f150 4x4? Seems like all you might need is a new steering column, linkage and transmission... But I'm just guessing. Some advice/experience on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

you could always put in a b&m shifter on it instead of a new steering column

Definately need a transmission flex plate instead of the manual trans flywheel. Am not sure about the mounting of the X-fer case to the tranny or the drive shaft length. Shouldn't be to difficult going in your desired direction.

Automatic transmissions require cooling through a cooler and the radiator. Do you have that?

If not your need an automatic transmission radiator, cooler, and lines.

I've seen all these for your truck at Pull a Part.

One thing I found when I did this to my '79 2wd was there seems to be a slight clearance issue with the x-member, making it really hard to slide the tranny into place. If you pull the enging and put it and tranny in as 1 peice it's no problem, but like I said this was a 2wd. you can get a tranny cooler from the local parts store that'll work just fine, and as much as I hate to say but the "floor" shifter from a mid 80's cavalier works great in this swap as it's a cable shifter and can be made to work just about anywhere. Just my .02 though.

if you have a np-435, why in the world you want to change to a crappy automatic, that is one of the strongest transmissions ever made....if you have a different trans, try and find the np and put that one in there it will bolt up just fine, and be your cheapest option
