Lightbulb questions about fuel problems...

Hey fellas, I am a newbie to the forum so for the last couple days I have been doing a lot of reading and have seen some great info here...I have just bought a 1985 f150 2x4 351W with a Holley carb. It's 3 hours away and the carb is not getting gas so I need to get it fixed so I can get it home. My truck has two tanks and I was wondering if the mechanical fuel pump is the only fuel pump or are there more fuel pumps in the tanks like other trucks I have seen here? Also, it has been sitting for a year or so and my fuel pump is not spitting gas when I put the line in a gas can so I bought a new one but haven't put it on yet. If that doesn't solve the problem of the carb not getting gas, and the switch that changes tanks underneath the truck is still faulty, can I run a line straight from one of the tanks to the fuel pump as a quick fix so I can get the truck home without having to tow it? thank you for any and all help, Dannie.

You should have a fuel pump for both tanks I beleive. Just replace the front one and only use that tank just to get it home and you can figure out which one (or both) is bad.

Also I see you bought a piece of lumber, no wonder it wont run right!

Edit: check with someone who knows more about your vintage of truck. I could and probably am completely wrong. I'm going off a 92 that I worked on once.

If the tanks have the 4 wire connectors then there are pumps in the tanks.
2 wire plugs have senders only.
If you try the bypass hose be careful as the other tank may pump or siphon fuel out through the disconnected line via the switching valve.
Which switching valve do you have? electric, non-electric, or manual?

Well, my father-in-law put the new fuel pump on and it works. It pulled the brown gas from the line running to the rear tank and now its pumping clear. He hooked it up to the carb that's on it right now and it cranked and ran without any problems. This truck has been sitting for about 2 years but is in great condition. It needs a little minor body work on the passenger side from a fender-bender years ago but other than that its all good. I plan on investing a little money and some time and eventually have a really nice truck. The first thing is getting AC!!
