please help

I have an 86 f150 5.0. I dropped the dual tanks to clean them and found front tank has two holes. Can I bypass the front tank and just use the rear? I ran it for five minutes and it died on me. Any suggestions?

Get a new tank they are only $100 at Autozone. (Not including sender or pump).
