There is definately spark during the no crank condition, at first there wasn't and we tested the coil and found it to be bad, so replaced that. When it was running it would run really good cold and get worse as it got hot and once it was warm it would have a tapping sound during acceleration almost like a spark knock. Now when I try to start it it starts and shuts off imediately and then will not start again for at least 12 hours. Really fustrating.
If you set the timing, be sure to pull the spout connector (you may already know). It keeps the computer from advancing the timing while you set intila timing. My old '86 done this one time, and it was the filter in the selector (like westtnfx4 said). hell, i didn't even know about it.
Mine would also fall dead when it was hot outside.
PIP sensor once, and the ignition module once as well, even though autozone tested as good, it was a FAIL. Check the PIP sensor (profile ignition pickup, it is inside the distributor, changing the whole distributor was easier for me at the time), could be the problem.
Like I said, mine would just fall dead until it cooled back down. then start back up. Might of went a week, or an hour. Just depended on how long it took to short again.
