Default Linkage broke, how tuff to fix?

Well, I got stuck in stop-and-go traffic and my old clutch got hot and eventually I had to be jamming the tranny into second with vigor until it finally snapped the linkage.
I got AAA towed to a local garage, but I wanna find out from you all if this isn't something that can be fixed from my drive way. I know that some vehicles have linkage covers that can be gotten at from under the tranny housing to fix just this kind of thing, but when I asked the mechanic he said he'd have to put it up on the lift to get at it.
I only have bottle jacks, jack stands and a driveway and the truck is not lifted at all, so how tough would this be to fix on my own?

Thanks.

EDIT: further investigation tells me that I need to ID the transmission that's in my truck cuz now I'll be needing to replace the whole thing. Ford doesn't make individual parts for this fix any more apparently. Junk yard time. Oh I guess i need to search on how to ID my transmission on the boards now.

EDIT: can any one tell me which transmission I have if i have a 6 bolt tranny cover?

Mo EDIT: I found a picture that exactly matched this cover... it's from a dodge!

EDIT: more info. it looks like a Warner T-18 which is the standard tranny. Can you put a 12" extension on a truck that has a tranny with a 4" extension?
