found this 82 f150 in junk yard, the tag says 3L50, but it totally acts like an open diff. but there is not much play in the diff, there is no noticeable play in the pinion, should i pull this axle? is it worth it? im thinking it is, i would guess the clutch packs are so worn they are worthless, would that be an issue? from the best i can tell, there was no leaks, and the rust is only surface deep.
i have a 3.55 open 8.8 in my truck now, but its a little wore out, this 9 in seems less worn out and to my understanding would be more valuable and stronger. what do yall think? im a new bee when it comes to rear ends but im really interested to get my feet in the water. thanks all.

Only to someone who wants it.

That's a popular myth, but it's strictly a myth.

They're deceptively complicated, and messing with one without knowing what you're doing is dangerous. A maladjusted pinion can cause the axle to lock up while driving. And the U-bolts should never be reused.
Alright. of coarse an LSD would be nice, and the only reason I was considering pulling this axle was because it's a factory LSD. But the factory carriers often crack right? Also did not know their extra strength was just a myth.
Sorry I'm not on here that often and I've been lazy and haven't taken the time to put my truck in my signature.
In terms of working on it. I understand enuff of the complexity to get myself in some serious trouble
I understand the concepts, just don't have the hands on know how to apply those concepts. and I know there is plenty more that I don't know. Noted on u bolts btw
But at this point then the only possible advantage to this rear end would be the lsd, but obviously have to repair it, and with no strength advantage then spending the time rebuilding it is pretty much not worth it Only value I can see it having at this point is something to learn on or maybe resell? Probly not worth much anyway

Ford 9" rear-ends are a highly reputed differential. The clutches sell for $40-$100 online with plenty of youtube videos to show you how to do it. A little elbow grease, some wire wheel, and a can of paint will get this rear-end looking new in no time at all. I'd say go for it.
Just as an update, pick and pull had a 4th of July sale, half off everything you pull. i saw this as a last chance, and my father and i jumped on in.
because the u boltys were so rusted, we ended up having to borrow a cordless sawzall from my work and cut them like that. as expected, that was fun!
Bracing for it, as i cut the first one, i moved under as much cover as i could, and the top of the bolt shot up and put a little pea-sized dent in the inner fender
but other wise the rest of them did nothing, everything else came off with incredible ease, and we looped some straps around each end and yanked it to a cart to fight the sand all way back
also grabbed these sweet tires off of a 83 that someone dumped some money into.
Here is a better picture of the id tag, luckly, it is the original axle to the truck we pulled it from and its 31 spline! SCORE for 70 bucks!!
