The only thing is you will lose the little ability to pull heat from the coolant in the cab if your engine gets too hot. I've bypassed a few with no ill effects. Just make sure your radiator is clean and there aren't too many fins bent over. I'm assuming you are doing this due to a leak?

Default should be fine

I've had to bypass the heater core before on a couple different occasions. I haven't ever noticed any problems at all when I have.it's not the job if the heaeter core to pull heat from the engine, but to keep the cab warm.your thermostat, water pump and radiator should take care of cooling the engine if everything is operating right.like the other guy before me said,as ling as the radiator is clean and there's not too many dings and flattened fins on it you should be fine..until next winter...I know it sounds silly, but to procrastinate on this job will come back to bite you..the next thing you know,it will be. Cold and snowing and you'll be trying to fix it in the cold..or trying to get an appt somewhere....it can be a pain in the butt, but just take your time don't get in a hurry jeep your witts about you and stay focased and you can do it..good luck to your sir,YouTube can help you a lot...
