Why switch? Is it just swapping one for the other,or is something else involved? I have never done this so any help would be nice.

 

As to why, an alternator produces power at lower rpm, like idle, and doesn't have the brushes. If you stay with a 1 wire type alt would be easier. Done it several times but it's been so long ago I really can't remember what's involved.
